Why won’t my car start?
1. Dead Battery
Most common reason.
If your lights are dim, you hear clicking, or nothing happens when you try to start the car, your battery might be dead.
What to do:
Try jumpstarting the car using jumper cables and another vehicle. If it starts, drive it for at least 20–30 minutes to recharge the battery.
2. Loose or Corroded Battery Connections
Sometimes the battery is fine, but the cables are loose or covered in corrosion (a white, powdery substance).
What to do:
Make sure the cables are tight. If you see corrosion, clean it off gently with a wire brush or call a mechanic for help.
3. Starter Motor Problem
The starter is what helps the engine turn on. If it’s bad, you may hear a click when you turn the key, but the engine won’t crank.
What to do:
You’ll need a mechanic to inspect and possibly replace the starter.
4. Empty Gas Tank
It sounds obvious, but it happens! If your fuel gauge is broken or you ran out of gas unexpectedly, the car won’t start.
What to do:
Add fuel and try again.
5. Bad Ignition Switch
If turning the key doesn’t turn on the dashboard lights or the car randomly shuts off while driving, the ignition switch may be bad.
What to do:
You’ll need a technician to check and possibly replace it.
6. Faulty Alternator
The alternator charges the battery while the engine runs. If it’s not working, your battery may keep dying.
What to do:
Jumpstart the car — if it starts but dies again soon after, the alternator may need repair.
7. Anti-Theft System Locked the Car
Sometimes, the car’s anti-theft system can prevent it from starting, especially if the key fob battery is low or if the system was accidentally triggered.
What to do:
Try using a backup key or fob. If that doesn’t work, a mechanic or dealership may need to reset the system.
